Our story

Founded in 2017 in Nyon, Switzerland, SAPI (Save the People International) grew out of the determination of a group of committed professionals to act for the children and communities most vulnerable to humanitarian crises and social injustice. From the start, SAPI set itself the mission of defending children’s rights and promoting their access to protection, education and mental health, as well as to basic services.

In 2017, SAPI carried out key activities in Switzerland to raise awareness of children’s rights, mobilise resources and strengthen local solidarity, while joining strategic platforms such as Child Rights Connect and the Swiss Network for Education and International Cooperation (RECI).

Building on its local roots, SAPI began working in Africa in December 2017 in Kenya, where it runs an integrated multi-sector response for disadvantaged children, including refugee children. Building on this first experience, SAPI gradually extended its work to other countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, the Central African Republic and Belgium, relying on strong partnerships and a dynamic network of volunteers.

Our story is above all one of humanitarian commitment and solidarity, driven by the values of inclusion and dignity. Together with local communities, partners and donors, we work to build a world where every child can live in safety, learn and thrive. Ours is the story of an organisation that grows with and for the communities it supports. Thanks to a strong network of volunteers, partners and donors, SAPI has built lasting, inclusive interventions adapted to local realities. Every step of our journey reflects a constant commitment: to help build a fairer world where every child can live in safety, learn and thrive.

In 2018, SAPI carried out its first intervention in the Democratic Republic of Congo, providing psychosocial support, protection and educational help to more than 140 displaced children in North Kivu province and to more than 6,700 children affected by the humanitarian crisis linked to the Kamuina Nsapu conflict in the Kasai region.

Our goal

Promote social inclusion and justice for marginalised children and young people through lasting partnerships, reintegration programmes and community awareness-raising. Strengthen the protection, mental health, education and resilience of children and young people affected by conflict, migration or disasters.

Educate the public about a culture of solidarity and development cooperation.

Our mandate

SAPI Switzerland’s mandate towards children is to protect their fundamental rights and guarantee their access to education, mental health and a safe environment, while supporting their development and active participation in society. Our mandate is to ensure the protection, education and well-being of vulnerable children, in Switzerland and internationally, in response to the needs created by humanitarian and social crises.

Our Vision

A world where every child and every vulnerable community, in Switzerland and internationally, can grow up in dignity and safety, with equal opportunities.

Our Mission

SAPI is committed to protecting and supporting disadvantaged children, in Switzerland and internationally, especially those affected by humanitarian and social crises, by guaranteeing them access to education, protection and a safe environment that supports their development.

Our Approach

SAPI takes an integrated, human-rights-based approach that responds holistically to the needs of children, young people and their families, especially those affected by poverty, conflict or humanitarian crises. This approach aims for lasting impact by working at individual, family and community level at the same time.

Key principles of our strategic approach:

Based on children’s rights and participation

SAPI’s work is founded on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, ensuring these rights are respected, promoted and protected. We actively involve children, their families and their communities in designing and running projects, recognising their central role in lasting change.

Multi-sector, integrated approach

Education, mental health, psychosocial support and child protection are closely linked. SAPI designs coordinated interventions that meet these needs at the same time, providing comprehensive and consistent care for vulnerable children.

Adaptation to context and cultural sensitivity

Every intervention is adapted to local conditions, taking into account the socio-economic, cultural and political realities of the areas where we work. We carry out in-depth context analyses to make sure our work is effective, relevant and lasting.

Capacity building and development of local systems

SAPI works in partnership with local authorities, education, health and protection institutions and community actors to strengthen existing skills and infrastructure. We support the creation of lasting systems that ensure services continue and stay high quality.

Promoting resilience and self-reliance

The resilience of children, families and communities is at the heart of our strategy. Our interventions aim to strengthen their ability to cope with shocks and build a stable future, notably through access to quality education, suitable psychosocial support and effective protection.

Inclusive, gender-sensitive approach

SAPI makes sure girls and boys, including children with disabilities, have fair access to all services. We actively fight discrimination and work to change social norms that marginalise certain groups.

Advocacy and collective action

Beyond direct intervention, SAPI advocates with authorities and international institutions for policies that support children’s rights, mental health and protection. We also encourage collaboration between humanitarian, government and community actors.

Play-centred approach

SAPI’s play-centred psychosocial approach builds the resilience of children affected by crises, using structured play activities to encourage expression, strengthen social and emotional skills and restore a sense of safety and hope.
